What Is the North Hills Elementary Food Pantry Initiative?

The North Hills Elementary food pantry is a community-driven effort designed to provide accessible, reliable food support to families in need. Located in Room 135 at the school, the pantry will serve families weekly and help address food insecurity while fostering dignity, care, and inclusion.

After meeting with school leaders and community partners, it was clear that refrigeration and freezer storage would be essential and that’s where Carolina Basement Systems was proud to step in.

Our team arrived at the distribution site at where Bank of America, school staff, and community volunteers were already hard at work. After signing in, gearing up, and receiving instructions, we joined the flow of an incredibly efficient system designed to get hundreds of bags out the door and into the hands of families by the afternoon.

Inside the warehouse, volunteers were busy:

Assembling and tying meal bags
Adding hand-written notes and gift cards
Restocking items on the packing tables
Moving full bags to the loading dock
Breaking down boxes and keeping stations organized

Outside, loading volunteers coordinated traffic, checked delivery quantities, and helped direct vehicles to their routes.

Shrinkage Cracks in Poured Walls

Concrete can crack over time, often early on in its lifespan as it cures and shrinks. So, if you find a short, often vertical, hairline crack in your foundation wall — especially if it occurs near the seam where the forms were joined for the initial foundation pour — it may be nothing to worry about. Cracks of these type usually don’t represent a structural weakness that could worsen over time. Foundation wall cracks don’t magically go away; they get worse with time. The thing is, they tend to do so very slowly. So slowly that you may not even notice them getting bigger. So, it’s tempting to forget about them and let them be. But if you just let foundation cracks grow, there is a danger that the entire wall may fail, and then you’re in for a very messy, very expensive situation.

So, just as foundation cracks don’t get better with time, they also don’t get any cheaper to fix. In fact, it’s pretty much guaranteed that your cracked foundation will never be cheaper to fix than it is today. So, we always recommend fixing now rather than later.

If your basement wall is cracking due to foundation settlement, you may see symptoms all over your house that you didn’t realize were related. Things like sticking windows and doors or sloping floors and gapping ceilings can all be related to a sinking foundation. This means, when you repair your foundation, you may actually take care of other problems throughout the house. And, of course, if you’re planning any remodeling in the future, it’s always best to have a level foundation to begin with.

Here at Carolina Basement Systems, we love to give back to our community. Our team recently came together to assemble 100 blessing bags to distribute amongst the homeless community in downtown Winston Salem and offer a helping hand to those in need.

A Team Effort:

During our weekly One Team meeting, our whole team at Carolina Basement Systems came together to assemble the blessing bags. The bags included personal hygiene products, hydration packs, snacks, and water. Our team enjoyed assembling these bags and even included a note of encouragement to lift spirits.

Distributing the bags:

Once the bags were assembled, the management team at Carolina Basement Systems headed to downtown Winston-Salem to the bus station, as this is a frequented location for homeless individuals. Our team not only handed out the blessing bags, but they also cooked hot dogs on site to provide a hot meal. Our team was able to cook and serve 120 hot meals, to accompany the 100 blessing bags.

There are many long-term solutions for these problems. Full encapsulation in CleanSpace and SilverGlo protected the crawl space from moisture coming from the ground and walls. It isolated the house from the ground and will trap the water underneath the wrapping. Since this house had a block wall and dirt floor crawl space there was very little protection against water seeping into the area. Encapsulating it with CleanSpace and SilverGlo created a vapor barrier that was needed to protect the area properly. Of course, the water doesn’t just disappear, so we installed a sump pump. This will pump out all the water trapped beneath the CleanSpace that comes from the ground and outside of the walls. To really ensure the crawl space was protected moving forward we also installed a SaniDry dehumidifier that keeps the air in the crawl space dry. Lastly, we sealed the crawl space shut. Covering the venting and doorway is important to control air quality and temperature inside the crawlspace.
